# Competitors (`mttr_competitors`)

Updated October 24, 2026.

## What does mttr_competitors do?

Where a site is, from the address or phone numbers on its own pages; the sites near it doing similar work; everyone near it; and sites doing similar work elsewhere. A key may make this call on the sites it has claimed.

Who may call it: Your claimed sites.

## When to use it

- You want to know who a local business is up against.

## What you ask

You might say: “Who are example.com’s competitors?”

```
mttr_competitors({ site: "example.com" })
```

| Argument | Type | Needed | What it is |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `site` | Text | Yes | The site, as a domain such as example.com. |

## What comes back

- Where the site is.
- Each competitor with its score, pages, and how many sites read link to it.
- Three lists of their own: rivals near it in similar work, everyone near it, and similar sites elsewhere, and where the site ranks by score among its rivals near it.

A sample, with made-up sites and figures:

| Site | Score | Pages | Linked from |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| example.com | 72 | 100 | 4 sites |
| rival.example | 66 | 58 | 9 sites |
| north.example | 48 | 37 | 1 site |

A score says pages are well formed. It does not say an assistant cites the site.

## Over HTTP

```
curl "https://mttr.si/api/v1/sites/example.com/competitors" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $MTTR_KEY"
```

## When it fails

| When | Status | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Your assistant has no key yet | 401 over MCP | Sign up with `mttr_signup`, then connect again with the key it gives. |
| The key has not claimed the site | 404 | Claim it with `mttr_claim`, then `mttr_claim_check`. |
