One score, four stages

Every page is held to one rulebook, in the order a crawler meets a site. The rules and their weights are our own. What they add up to is below, and every finding on a report names the rule behind it.

How does mttr score a site?

Every page is checked against one rulebook in four stages: access, understand, trust and act. A stage scores the share of its checks that pass, each counted by its rule’s weight, and the four add up by their share of 100 points. A site that keeps crawlers out is held at 20 or less.

Access

Can it be fetched and indexed at all?

A crawler meets this first, and nothing after it counts if the door is shut.

It gates the rest: a site closed to crawlers is held down, whatever else it does well.

What it looks at

  1. Crawlers let inrobots.txt, and firewalls that turn AI crawlers away
  2. Every page loads, and may be indexedno dead links, no pages told to stay out
  3. The words are in the pagenot written in later by script
  4. One address, close to homesettled redirects, pages a few clicks deep

Understand

Can a machine tell what each page says, and lift an answer from it?

Search engines and assistants quote what they can take whole: a clear subject, and answers set out plainly.

Understand, in depth

What it looks at

  2. Answers a machine can liftthe answer first, lists and tables

Trust

Is there a reason to believe it, and to cite it?

An assistant cites a page it can stand behind. Here mttr reads for what a careful editor would ask.

What it looks at

  1. Reasons to believe itsources shown, claims that can be checked
  2. Who said it, and whena named publisher and a date
  3. Pages of its ownnot near-copies that swap a town name

Act

Can the visitor, or an agent, take the next step?

Being found is half of it. The page has to let someone act once they arrive.

What it looks at

  1. A next step on every pagea way to get in touch, or to ask for a quote

A score says pages are well formed. It does not say an assistant cites the site.

How it reads and decides

Every step, limit and figure is set out in the methodology.

Code decides
Every rule passes or fails by code. Where a model gives an opinion and is unsure, the page goes to a person.
Not cheap to game
A check that can be met without helping a reader measures nothing, so it is not a rule.
Never more than it read
A read that stopped at its limit says so, and claims nothing it could not see.
Closed means closed
While a site keeps crawlers out, nothing else on it can be found, and the score says so.
Only what anyone can see
Public pages, by their public address. Never a page behind a sign-in, a form, or an address inside a network.
As polite as a person
It follows robots.txt, reads a few pages at a time, and says who it is in every request.
It needs no access to your site
mttr reads public pages only. Your agent makes each change with the access it already has, fully automated or with your approval by email, and mttr grades every one on the live site.
