# Basement and Crawl Space Humidity
## What Causes a Humid Basement or Crawl Space?
Condensation in a basement can lead to major problems if ignored or unnoticed.
Whenever the outside air is warmer than the inside air, especially when the outside air is humid, you are likely to have a [condensation problem](https://www.basementsystems.com/basement-dehumidifier.html) in your basement or crawl space. This is because the Relative Humidity (RH) of air goes up 2.2% for every one-degree you cool it. Basements and crawl spaces are naturally cool because they are below ground level. Think of your home like a chimney - air flows upwards, allowing air to escape the upper levels, with new air being sucked in at the lower levels, creating a cycle of air within the home. If the air being sucked in at the ground level is moist, the whole home will eventually feel the effects, and indoor air quality will suffer over time.
