# Water Heater Repair: what does it cost?

A clear look at the work, the price factors, and the questions to ask before you approve a plumbing job.

Start With The Price

## What will the work cost?

No hot water does not automatically mean you need a new heater. We check the unit, explain the fault, and compare the repair with replacement when it makes sense.

The work behind the number

Water heater repairs and connection work have a $300 minimum. The $300–$850 planning range covers selected failed-component repairs and connection work, with tankless service-valve work toward the higher end. Internal elements, thermostats and gas controls have their own examples below. Commercial equipment and replacement heaters are separate.

### What can change your price?

- Tank, tankless, electric, gas, or hybrid equipment.
- The failed component and whether replacement parts are available.
- Age, condition, and manufacturer warranty coverage.

Behind The Price

## Where this guidance comes from.

Completed jobs reviewed

We reviewed the charged work in completed Housecall Pro jobs, not just job titles. These are selected examples, not a company-wide average. The published range uses our current $300 minimum and a rounded upper endpoint from reviewed work. Lower recorded charges are historical examples, not current offers. Recorded discounts and undiscounted service charges help show the budget spread; a past discount is not a current offer. Unrelated work, unselected options and gratuities are excluded. Your written proposal confirms your equipment, work and price. Ten distinct residential repair/connection jobs were checked: seven internal-component repairs and three connection or accessory jobs. Relevant service charges before job-level discounts ranged from $120 to $820; internal-component repair subtotals ranged from $250 to $565. A $2,835 bundled invoice included a water conditioner and is not used as a heater-repair price.

**Scope:** Water heater repairs and connection work have a $300 minimum. The $300–$850 planning range covers selected failed-component repairs and connection work, with tankless service-valve work toward the higher end. Internal elements, thermostats and gas controls have their own examples below. Commercial equipment and replacement heaters are separate.

## Different work. Different price.

### Elements and thermostats

$300–$495

The planning range applies the current $300 minimum. Six reviewed repair scopes charged $250–$495 before whole-job discounts; the lower historical charge is not a current offer. Examples ranged from one failed element to both elements and two thermostats, with one revised diagnosis including an element with the thermostat repair.

### Propane pilot / thermopile assembly

$565 example

One reviewed repair including the assembly, gasket and testing. Different gas controls or models need their own diagnosis.

### Heater supply-line repair

$300 minimum

The current minimum is $300. One older limited connection repair charged $120; that historical charge is not a current offer. The connection and access determine your written repair price.

### Temperature-and-pressure discharge work

$365 example

One reviewed scope to correct valve orientation and discharge piping.

### Tankless service-valve replacement

$820 example

One completed job replacing corroded service valves. This is separate from a routine flush.

### Flush and maintenance

Priced separately

Two reviewed flushing lines were $220 and $275. Their invoices also contained an anode upgrade or toilet repairs; those larger totals are not flush-only prices.

### Commercial blower motor

$3,557 example

One separate commercial repair with an OEM motor assembly and startup. Excluded from the residential planning band.

## What changes the price at your property?

- Tank, tankless, electric, gas, or hybrid equipment.
- The failed component and whether replacement parts are available.
- Age, condition, and manufacturer warranty coverage.
- Any separate connection or code work needed with the repair.

## What the work covers.

- The diagnostic, maintenance, or repair work expressly listed in your written proposal.

## What may be separate.

- A replacement water heater, additional failed parts, and code upgrades unless listed.
- Maintenance pricing does not include every possible repair.

## Before you approve the work.

Make sure your written proposal explains the diagnosis, the work included, any separate items, and the total price. If something is unclear, ask. We want you to understand your options before you decide.

FAQs

## Water Heater Repair pricing questions, answered.

Quick answers from our expert plumbers. Still have a question? Call our team and a real person will pick up.

01 What is the minimum for a water heater repair or connection repair?

Water heater repairs and connection work have a $300 minimum. The failed part, equipment and access determine the written repair price. Replacement heaters and routine maintenance are separate scopes.

02 Can you quote the repair before diagnosing it?

We can explain the service fee and common possibilities, but the failed component and condition determine the repair. You receive the repair price before approving that work.

03 Will a flush fix a leaking tank?

A flush is maintenance. It does not repair a failed tank. We identify the source of the leak before recommending repair or replacement.

04 When is replacement worth comparing?

Compare replacement when the tank is failing, parts are unavailable, or the repair is expensive relative to the condition and remaining use of the heater. We can show the repair and replacement scopes side by side.
