## Short Answer: Air Filters Work Best When Airflow, Fit, and System Design All Work Together

Your HVAC air filter is designed to remove airborne particles that can affect indoor air quality and health. But **filtration doesn’t always work as intended.**

If airflow is limited, air bypasses the filter, or contaminants enter your home from unfiltered sources, your air filter may be doing little to improve your indoor air quality.

## Why Indoor Air Quality Matters

Indoor air quality researchers focus heavily on **particulate matter (PM)** — tiny particles suspended in the air that can be harmful when inhaled.

Particles measuring **2.5 micrometers or smaller (PM2.5)** are especially concerning because they:

- Penetrate deep into the lungs
- Can enter the bloodstream
- Are linked to respiratory and cardiovascular issues

Common household sources include:

- Outdoor air infiltration
- Indoor smoking
- Burning candles or incense

While opening windows or using bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans can help dilute pollutants, those strategies aren’t always effective — especially on high-pollen days or in windy conditions. That’s where HVAC filtration can help.

## 1. Not Enough System Runtime

Air filters can only clean air **when air is moving through them**. For most homes, filtration occurs only when the furnace or air conditioner is running.

If your system runs infrequently, very little air is being filtered.

Some homeowners switch the thermostat fan from **“Auto” to “On”** to increase filtration time. While this can help, it may also increase energy use — sometimes by **$30–$40 per month or more**, depending on the system.

There is a caveat. If your ductwork leaks, using the fan in the “On” position can draw additional debris into your home, as discussed later in this note.

## 2. Not Enough Airflow

Poor airflow reduces filtration effectiveness.

Common causes include:

- Ductwork that’s too small
- Filters that are too restrictive
- Dirty filters

All of these increase **total static pressure**, forcing the blower to work harder while moving less air — which reduces both comfort and filtration.

## 3. Air That Never Gets Filtered

Air that leaks into your home bypasses filtration entirely.

Common infiltration points:

- Doors and windows
- Gaps around floor registers
- Structural leaks
- Filter bypass (see below)

Because this air never passes through your HVAC filter, **sealing your home** is often the most effective way to reduce particulates.

## 4. No Filter Installed

It sounds obvious — but it happens more often than you’d think.

Filters may be:

- Difficult to access
- Removed and forgotten
- Removed and forgotten

Without a filter, not only is your air unfiltered, but internal HVAC components like the blower, coil, and heat exchanger can become dirty and inefficient.

## 5. Filter Bypass Due to Poor Installation

Filters only work if **air flows through them**.

If the filter isn’t seated properly:

- Air takes the path of least resistance
- Contaminants go around the filter instead of through it

This defeats the purpose of filtration.

## 6. Improperly Sealed Ductwork

Leaky ducts don’t just waste energy — they can **pull contaminants directly into your home.**

There are two primary pathways contaminants can take:

- They can be drawn into leaky return ducts
- Leaky supply ducts can raise the pressure in the space in which they’re installed, forcing unfiltered air into the living space.

Ducts that are in the attic can draw in contaminated air (return ducts) or pressurize the attic forcing contaminated air through leaks in the building envelope, including those around supply registers. The same mechanism works for ducts in the crawlspace.

## 7. Low-Efficiency (Low MERV) Filters

Filters are rated using **MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value)**. Higher numbers capture more and smaller particles.

Typical one-inch filters are often **MERV 2**, which offer minimal filtration.

For comparison:

- **MERV 10** removes roughly 50% of small particulates
- **MERV 13** removes over 90% of PM2.5

However, higher MERV filters also restrict airflow. If your system isn’t designed for them, they can:

- Reduce efficiency
- Increase wear and tear
- Shorten equipment lifespan

This is why filter upgrades should always be matched to system capacity.

## What Homeowners Should Do Next

To improve filtration without harming your system:

- Change filters at least **every three months**
- Ensure proper filter fit and sealing
- Avoid upgrading MERV ratings without guidance
- Address duct leaks and home infiltration
- Consult an HVAC professional to balance filtration and airflow

The goal is **cleaner air without stressing your equipment.**

## The Bottom Line

If your HVAC air filter isn’t improving indoor air quality, the issue often isn’t the filter itself — it’s airflow, system design, or air that never reaches the filter in the first place.

A professional evaluation can identify where filtration is breaking down and help restore both air quality and system health.
