We narrow the field to a few candidates and brush large samples on the wall or on boards you can move around. You live with them for a day or two and look in the morning, in the evening and under your own lamps. Then we settle the sheen. Old plaster with waves and patches looks calmer in flat or matte. Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and children's rooms need a finish that wipes clean, and trim is usually a step glossier. For the outside of a house, we take the fixed colors as the starting point: the brick, the roof, the stoop and the houses on either side of a shared wall. Trim, door and cornice colors are picked to sit well with those. A landmark, or any house within a city historic district, needs Landmarks Preservation Commission approval for a new exterior color. Renters and co-op owners should check the lease or house rules before choosing anything for halls or front doors.  ## Color consulting in Bronx: common questions ### How many colors should a small apartment have?
