## They excavate wood. They don’t eat it.
Carpenter ants remove wood to make nesting galleries; their food includes insects and sweet materials such as honeydew. A parent nest may be outdoors in a stump or tree, with satellite nests elsewhere—including a building. That is why an inspection looks beyond the ants on the kitchen counter. [Source: UC IPM](https://ipm.ucanr.edu/home-and-landscape/carpenter-ants/).
### Identification starts with details
Workers of common western species are often about ¼–½ inch long. Look for a single waist node and a smoothly rounded upper thorax in side view. Some are black; others have reddish coloring. Size or color alone is not enough to identify the species.
[Identification reference: UC IPM](https://ipm.ucanr.edu/home-and-landscape/carpenter-ants/)
### Flying ant or termite?
Winged ants have elbowed antennae, a narrow waist, and longer front wings than hind wings. Termite swarmers have straighter antennae, a broad waist, and wings of similar length. A clear close-up or collected specimen is more useful than guessing from a distance.

## Signs worth checking
A carpenter ant indoors may be a forager from outside. It does not, by itself, prove there is a nest or structural damage in your home.
- **Recurring trails:** Note where ants enter and whether activity increases after sunset.
- **Coarse wood debris:** Nest-cleaning debris, called frass, can contain wood fibers and insect parts. A sawdust pile alone is not a diagnosis.
- **Winged ants emerging indoors:** Repeated emergence around trim, vents, or windows warrants closer inspection.
- **Moisture and damaged wood:** Leaks and decay are useful inspection clues. Satellite nests can also occupy dry wood or wall voids.

### Before your appointment
Photograph the ants and any debris, note the room and time of day, and tell us about leaks or previous treatments. Share what you have seen before disturbing a suspected nest or opening a wall.

LOCAL FIELD OBSERVATIONS
## Where we see more carpenter-ant activity
In our field work, we see more carpenter-ant activity around wooded properties in Spokane Valley, Coeur d’Alene, Athol, Hayden, Orofino, Kendrick, and Juliaetta. Trees, stumps, stored wood, and moisture are useful places to begin an inspection; a city name alone does not tell us whether a home has a nest.
### Spokane Valley
For homes beside wooded lots and tree cover, tell us where you have seen ants around the house and yard.

### North Idaho
Our local observations include wooded properties around Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, and Athol.

### Clearwater & Palouse
Orofino, Kendrick, and Juliaetta are also part of the wooded communities we inspect and treat.

## How Supernova approaches carpenter ants
### 1. Identify & inspect
We identify the ants, inspect reported activity, and look for likely nesting sites, entry routes, and moisture conditions. Indoor and outdoor findings help us decide where to focus.
### 2. Explain the treatment
Depending on what we find, our approach may include targeted baiting and non-repellent treatments. We explain the recommended scope, access needed, and price before treatment.
### 3. Address the conditions
We point out conditions that need attention and explain what to watch for afterward. Ask us what follow-up is included in your specific service recommendation.
**Which plan fits?** Start with identification and an inspection so we can confirm the scope of your carpenter-ant problem. [Compare Shield, Strike, and Naturals](https://supernovapest.com/recommendations-pricing/#choose-your-plan) to understand the general service options.
## Reduce the conditions that help them nest
Repair leaks and damaged wood, improve drainage and ventilation, and keep gutters clear. Store firewood away from the house and off the ground. Keep branches from touching the structure and seal accessible entry gaps around utilities. These steps support control but do not confirm that an existing colony is gone. [Prevention guidance: UC IPM](https://ipm.ucanr.edu/home-and-landscape/carpenter-ants/) and [NC State Extension](https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/biology-and-control-of-carpenter-ants).
## Common questions
### Does one carpenter ant mean my house is damaged?
No. An ant may be foraging from an outdoor colony. Damage develops where ants excavate nesting galleries; its extent requires inspection. [University of Minnesota Extension](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/home-maintenance/household-insects/carpenter-ants).
### Can I tell carpenter ants from other ants by size?
Not reliably. Worker sizes vary, so identification uses several features together. If you are unsure, start with a photo and our [general ant guide](https://supernovapest.com/pest/ants/).
## Let’s find out what you’re seeing.
Tell us where the ants are showing up and whether you have noticed trails, winged ants, wood debris, or moisture. We’ll help you choose a sensible next step.
