# Why Prevent Mosquitos? June 3, 2019 Before we examine how to [prevent mosquito breeding](https://www.wrightlandscape.ca/residential-landscape-design-services/lawn-care-kitchener-waterloo/mosquito-prevention/), it is important to understand why preventing their breeding is important in the first place. Although small, mosquitoes can be dangerous. Mosquitoes often carry diseases and are able to spread them to humans when they bite. The most common one we hear a lot about in North America is West Nile virus, in addition to several types of encephalitis and dog heartworm. In more recent years, the Zika virus and dengue fever have become more prevalent as well. Mobility is the factor that makes mosquitos particularly threatening. They have the ability to travel far distances and across geographical boundaries, making them more difficult to contain and control. ## How to Prevent Mosquito Breeding in Your Yard The good news is that there are many [preventative measures](https://www.wrightlandscape.ca/residential-landscape-design-services/lawn-care-kitchener-waterloo/mosquito-prevention/) you can take to reduce the number of mosquitoes in your yard. In order to do this, you can arm yourself with helpful tips, such as knowing which plants prevent mosquitos and how to prevent mosquito breeding in ponds. The number one thing you can do to prevent mosquito breeding is to remove sources of still water. The reason for this is that mosquitoes need stagnant water to lay their eggs and have them grow successfully. Keeping your yard tidy and reducing the amount of excess junk lying around will also help limit areas they may like to live. Be aware of and monitor the places around your yard where water can easily collect and ensure that you empty them promptly and thoroughly. ## How to Prevent Mosquito Breeding in Plants Most people’s backyards are home to many plants. The types of plants you grow in your gardens can have a large impact on mosquito breeding. Here are a few common plants to be aware of that attract mosquitoes, and those that help keep them away. *Plants that attract mosquitoes:* - Water lilies - Water lettuce - Taro - Papyrus - Flowers (mosquitos are attracted to nectar) or any plant or tree with leaves that hold water Plants that keep mosquitoes away: - Citronella grass - Lavender - Basil - Catmint - Rosemary - Garlic - Bee Balm - Cedars - Clove - Lemongrass - Mint - Tea tree By planting strategically, you can fend off mosquitos while simultaneously growing a lush garden, maybe even with some useful spices. ## How to Prevent Mosquito Breeding in Ponds Preventing mosquito breeding in ponds can be a little bit more challenging since, after all, they are attracted to still water. Having said that, certain types of fish, such as goldfish, killifish and guppies eat mosquito larvae and prevent breeding. In addition to fish, keep the vegetation around your pond trimmed back and try keep the water flowing as much as possible, such as with a water pump.
