When black-and-red bugs start covering the sunny side of a house in Moscow, the scene can look worse than the actual threat. Boxelder bugs can gather by the dozens or hundreds, work into gaps around windows and siding, and reappear indoors during winter. But they are nuisance invaders—not wood-destroying insects.

Supernova owner Zach Leavitt regularly encounters boxelder bugs around Moscow homes. Moscow’s cooler conditions compared with Lewiston can make the fall transition feel more abrupt, although the exact timing changes with the weather each year. The important signal is not a date on the calendar. It is adults beginning to cluster on warm exterior surfaces and search for protected places to spend winter.

Do boxelder bugs damage a house?

Normally, no. Boxelder bugs do not eat structural wood, tunnel through walls, or establish a reproducing infestation inside a home. They feed outdoors on seeds and plant material, then use buildings as shelter when temperatures fall.

That does not make a large invasion pleasant. Boxelder bugs can leave spots on curtains, walls, and other surfaces. Crushing them may also release an unpleasant odor. The problem is usually the number of insects and where they appear—not hidden structural damage.

If you are unsure about the identification, compare your insect with the photos on our boxelder bug control page. Correct identification matters because several fall invaders enter buildings for similar reasons but should not automatically be treated as the same pest.

The important signal is not a date on the calendar. It is adults beginning to cluster on warm exterior surfaces and search for protected places to spend winter.

## Do boxelder bugs damage a house?

Normally, no. Boxelder bugs do not eat structural wood, tunnel through walls, or establish a reproducing infestation inside a home. They feed outdoors on seeds and plant material, then use buildings as shelter when temperatures fall.

That does not make a large invasion pleasant. Boxelder bugs can leave spots on curtains, walls, and other surfaces. Crushing them may also release an unpleasant odor. The problem is usually the number of insects and where they appear—not hidden structural damage.

If you are unsure about the identification, compare your insect with the photos on our [boxelder bug control page](https://supernovapest.com/pest/boxelder-bugs/). Correct identification matters because several fall invaders enter buildings for similar reasons but should not automatically be treated as the same pest.

## How to identify an adult boxelder bug

Adult boxelder bugs are about half an inch long. Their bodies are mostly black, with red or orange lines along the thorax and wings. When the wings are folded, their overlapping shape helps create a noticeable red-edged “X” across the back.

Young boxelder bugs, called nymphs, are smaller and much brighter red. In fall, the adults are the stage that survives winter.

They are sometimes confused with Western conifer seed bugs. Seed bugs are longer and brown, with widened, leaf-like sections on the hind legs. Our [fall invader guide](https://supernovapest.com/fall-pest-prevention/) shows both insects and explains how to tell them apart before deciding what to do.

## Why are they covering the sunny side of the house?

Boxelder bugs are attracted to warmth. As outdoor temperatures cool, south- and west-facing walls can remain warmer in the afternoon sun. Those surfaces become gathering points while the insects look for cracks and sheltered spaces.

The color of the house is not the main issue. Exposure, warmth, and accessible gaps matter more. A home with loose trim, worn weatherstripping, damaged screens, roofline openings, or gaps around utility penetrations can offer plenty of winter shelter.

The [University of Minnesota Extension’s boxelder bug guidance](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/home-maintenance/household-insects/boxelder-bugs) likewise notes that they favor warm southern and western exposures and begin entering cracks as the weather cools.

## Why do they show up indoors during winter?

A boxelder bug crawling across a window in January did not hatch in the living room. It most likely entered the structure during fall and stayed inactive in a wall, attic, siding gap, or another protected space.

Sunlight and indoor heat can wake some of those insects during a mild winter day. They then move toward bright windows while trying to get back outside. They do not all become active at once, which is why homeowners may remove several and then see more later.

This is also why spraying the visible bugs indoors usually disappoints. Killing the insects that have emerged does not close the openings or reach every individual hidden elsewhere in the structure.

## What should you do if they are already inside?

For scattered indoor boxelder bugs, physical removal is usually the cleanest answer:

- Vacuum them rather than crushing them against walls or curtains.
- Empty the vacuum promptly if it uses a reusable chamber.
- Use a broom and dustpan where vacuuming is inconvenient.
- Check nearby screens, window trim, and weatherstripping for obvious gaps.
- Avoid broad indoor spraying simply because a few bugs reached a sunny window.

There is no need to treat every room as though boxelder bugs are breeding throughout the house. They are seasonal visitors that entered from outdoors.

## The best control happens before they get settled

Prevention is strongest before large numbers move into wall spaces. Start with the parts of the home that give them access:

- repair torn window, door, soffit, and vent screens;
- replace worn door sweeps and garage-door seals;
- seal suitable gaps around pipes, cables, faucets, and other penetrations;
- inspect where siding, trim, windows, and the roofline meet; and
- keep required ventilation, drainage openings, dryer exhausts, and window weep holes open.

If a home has a history of heavy fall invasions, a targeted exterior treatment may also help while adults are clustering outside. The timing, application sites, and retreatment limits must follow the selected product’s label. The goal is not to soak the whole property. It is to treat appropriate exterior areas before the bugs disappear into inaccessible shelter.

Our [occasional invader service information](https://supernovapest.com/pest/other-occasional-invaders/) explains how identification, exclusion, and targeted treatment fit together.

## Should you remove a boxelder tree?

Usually, that is an expensive overreaction. Boxelder bugs can fly a considerable distance, and they may also feed around other maples and ash trees. Removing one nearby tree does not guarantee that the insects will stop finding the house.

A healthy tree also has value that normally outweighs a seasonal nuisance. Focus first on the structure: entry points, gathering areas, and treatment timing.

## When professional help makes sense

Professional service is most useful when large numbers repeatedly gather on the home, insects are entering through several areas, the upper structure is difficult to inspect, or the homeowner wants exterior treatment timed before overwintering begins.

We start by confirming the insect and looking at where it is gathering. Some Moscow homes need a focused seasonal service. Others mainly need better sealing and a vacuum. We would rather tell you the difference than sell a plan the property does not need.

If boxelder bugs are gathering around your siding or windows, visit our [Moscow pest control page](https://supernovapest.com/service-area/palouse/moscow/), review our [published recommendations and pricing](https://supernovapest.com/recommendations-pricing/), or [send Supernova a clear photo](https://supernovapest.com/contact/) for help identifying what you are seeing.
